Description

Adult Dinghy Sailing Course – Start Sailing Level 1

Welcome to Quest Howth’s Adult Dinghy Sailing Course, your ideal starting point for learning to sail in Howth Sound. This Irish Sailing Level 1 certified course teaches you the fundamentals of dinghy sailing over five enjoyable days on the water. Whether you’re completely new or brushing up after time away, you’ll gain the skills and confidence to take control of a dinghy independently.

⚓Why Choose This Course?

At Quest Howth, we specialise in small-group sailing courses designed for adults. Our Irish Sailing–qualified instructors provide patient, hands-on tuition focused on safety, fun, and personal progress.
You’ll learn in a supportive, social environment and sail in the sheltered waters of Howth Sound, making it ideal for beginners.
This course leads to the Irish Sailing Start Sailing Level 1 certificate, a nationally accredited qualification that’s the first step toward becoming a confident sailor.

🌊 What You Will Learn

Over three full days, you’ll cover all the core skills to handle a sailing dinghy safely and independently.

Rigging & Ropework

Learn to rig and de-rig a Laser Pico dinghy, identify parts of the boat, and understand how we control the sail sail. You’ll also master essential knots, such as the reef knot, bowline and figure of eight.

Steering, Tacking & Gybing

Practice tacking, gybing and steering on various points of sail under the guidance of your instructor. You’ll learn how to balance the boat, coordinate tiller and mainsheet, and execute smooth turns in both light and moderate winds.

Wind Awareness & Sail Trim

Understand how the wind works and how to adjust your sails for maximum efficiency. You’ll learn to trim the sail, find the “no-go zone,” and sail upwind, downwind, and across the breeze with control.

❓Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need to be fit or strong?
No special strength is required — just reasonable mobility and comfort around water. The course is relaxed and progressive, with full instructor support.

What if the weather is bad?
Safety always comes first. If conditions are unsuitable, we’ll adjust activities (e.g. theory or on-shore sessions) or reschedule as needed.

Can I bring my own gear?
Yes, you’re welcome to use your own wetsuit or lifejacket if they meet safety standards. Otherwise, we’ll provide everything.

How many people are in each class?
