The Start Sailing Course introduces you to the basics of sailing. We offer this course in our fleet of J80 Sportsboats, which are stable, dry, comfortable and are sailed as part of a team. The course leads to IS Start Sailing Certification.

In our Learn to Sail course we follow the syllabus as laid down by Irish Sailing you’ll gain a solid foundation in sailing techniques, starting with the basics and progressing to more advanced skills. Here’s what you can expect to learn:
- Boat Handling: Learn how to properly handle and manoeuvre a sailboat, including tacking and jibing.
- Wind Awareness: Understand how to read the wind and adjust your sails.
- Sailing Safety: Master essential safety protocols on the water, from wearing a life jacket to handling emergency situations like a Man Over Board.
- Sailing Terminology: Learn the essential terms that every sailor needs to know, like port, starboard, bow, and stern.

Our Learn to Sail course is available year-round, with both weekday and weekend classes to suit your availability. Each course runs over two consecutive days.- Next course dates: March 15th-16th, 2025

The cost for the Learn to Sail Course is €295per person for the full 2-day course. This includes all equipment, instruction, and certification.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Learn to Sail Course
Do I need previous sailing experience?
No! This course is designed for complete beginners. We start with the basics and build up your skills step by step. However, if you’d like to give sailing a short try before completing a full course, you can join one of our Try Sailing sessions.
What should I bring to the course?
Please wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing , and bring a hat, and sunscreen. We also recommend wearing non-slip shoes. All safety equipment, including life jackets, is provided.
Will I get a certificate?
Yes! Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive an Irish Sailing Certificate, which will be useful if you decide to pursue more advanced sailing qualifications, like our Learn To Sail 2.
Is the course suitable for children?
Our Learn to Sail Course is intended for adults. However, we do offer youth sailing courses for younger sailors. Please contact us for more information.
Next Steps
Once you’ve completed the course you can continue your sailing with Howth Yacht Club. You have the option to become part of our Race School and join the racing fleet, or for the adventurous sailors, join our cruising group on their various expeditions.
